The Journey To 00:00hour, 31 August 2009

Why is 00:00hour, 31 August 2009 so special for us? This is because 31 August 2009 is our 52th National Day. For us, it is more special because we have the activity of USM Balloonmen Merdeka Show at Penang Times Square. On 30 August 2009, there has a Super Merdeka Celebration-Youth Jam 09. So, we are the partner of Youth Jam 09.

A lot of preparation we have done for that activity. Firstly, in group of 5, we have to think ideas for how to release the helium balloons from fountain and drop balloons from balcony. Then, a group for releasing and dropping balloons are chosen.

After that, we have to produce our group costume. The costume must consist of sarong, balloons and mask from Project 2C. After discussion, we have our group costume.

On 28 August 2009, 9:00am at E48A, we have Costume Parade. At last, the best team are selected as the celebrity team to release the fountain balloons.

On 29 August 2009 (Saturday), we went to Penang Times Square to have a view of the site. About 12:30pm, we started our rehearsal. So, we knew how the USM Balloonmen Merdeka Show and what we have to do on that night.

On 30 August 2009 (Sunday), around 10.30pm, we started to prepare our group costume. Before this, we pumped the balloons with helium gas and wrote our Merdeka wishes on the balloons. For our group, our hands are drawn with "1 Malaysia" logo.

^Our hands with the logo "1 Malaysia".

At 11.30pm, all of us with our group costume waited at a place and prepared to start our USM Balloons Merdeka Show. When it is started, we walked to the fountain with a special sound. Then, we made two circles, one is the internal cicle, while the other is the external circle. Four obelisks are brought to there too. After that, the celebrity balloonmen went into the circle to prepare to release the balloon.

A few minutes before 00:00hour, 31 August 2009, the countdown started. When it is 00:00hour, all the people there shouted "Merdeka" loudly with a spirit of 1 Malaysia. At the same time, we released our own balloons, the celebrity released their balloon and some of the balloon are dropped from balcony. Suddenly, the sky is fulled of different colour balloons. With the releasing and dropping of balloons, USM Balloonmen Merdeka Show and Youth Jam 09 ended.

At 1am, 31 August 2009, we went back happily to USM campus although we are tired.

I felt very happy and lucky because I have such experience to celebrate the 52th National Day. Through this project, I learnt that to make a thing carry out successfully, we must have a good planning and work it out. Besides, we also need the co-operation from everyone and work as a team. Thank you, all the lecturers who involve in this project for your guidance and help, my group members, all my friends and the organiser of Youth Jam 09!!!

Happy Merdeka!!!

Pimpin Siswa Programme

On 7 to 9 August 2009, we took part in the "Pimpin Siswa" Programme. My camp was D'Risa Impiana Campsite, Grik, Perak. All the participants for this programme were given a bag, two pieces of T-shirt, a cap and a pen.

We had to gather at Padang Kawad at 9a.m. on 7 August.

Around 12.30p.m., we arrived at camp D'Risa, Grik, Perak. The camp was in orchard.

^There is a river besides our camp.

First, we were having our lunch. After that, our Muslim friends went to pray at mosque. At 3p.m., our programme started.

^The hall -one of the places for us to gather in camp.

First, we listened briefing about the rules during this programme from our camp commander. Then, we were separated into three companies. Each company had four small groups. I was in Company A and Group 3. Leaders like "Along". "Ah Ngah", "Alang" and so on were chosen. Flags for each group were given to the Alang respectively. After that, we had to give our handphones, wallets and watches to the facilitators for them to keep.

After rain stopped, we had to build camp ourselves. Each camp only for four people. It was a good experience for us.
Then, each of us was given a name tag, a small USM flag, a plate and a cup. We had to keep all these things well. This was our "amanah".

After dinner, we listened to a talk about sustainability. It was followed by the activity "Ice Breaking". We could know each others through this activity. In this camp, we had friends from different schools and engineering campus. This activity ended at 12a.m..

We have to patrol during night. So that, our camp was secure. I was on duty from 4a.m. till 6a.m..

^My friends.

On second day, we had our formal gathering first. Then, we had exercises. At 8a.m., we were having our breakfast. After eating, we had the activity "Cabaran Minda". In this activity, we had to use our minds to solve the problems. We were enjoyed in playing this activity.

Then, it was followed by the activity "Survival Cooking". We had to slaughter chicken ourselves and cook without using gas. I was helping my friend to slaughter the chicken. During slaughtering, some blood was split to my shirt. Besides, it needed patience and technique to cook with coal, wax and dry branches. Finally, we could have our lunch. We enjoyed it.

In the afternoon, we had another activity. Each group was given a picture. Then, we have to find out a message from the picture given. After that, we had to prepare a performance about the message that we had found out.

After that, we had the activity of "Community Service". Although it was raining, we still carried out our service. We went to the village near to our camp to help the villagers to clean up their house compound. The villagers gave us some fruits to eat. Then, the camp commander came and gave some present to the villagers.

At night, we listened another talk about 1 Malaysia. It was followed by our group performance. At 12a.m., we went back our own camp to sleep.

^My friends and I(right).

Suddenly, we were called to wake up. This is because we had jungle trekking in this midnight. During the journey, we could experience the nature and challenges of jungle trekking. My shirt and trousers were full of mud after this activity. During this activity, we could not use torchlight. So, we had to walk in darkness. It was a very good experience for me. When we arrived at our camp, it is about 4a.m.. Then, we went to bath and sleep.

At 7a.m., we gathered and had exercises. Then, we had our breakfast. After breakfast, we had to clean and keep our camp that we built two days ago. It was followed by a discussion. We were given the topics like sustainable school and sustainable hostel. Firstly, we discussed in group. Then, we made presentation by company.

Lastly, it was followed by closing ceremony. The camp commander gave us some advise and encouragement. Seen-Unseen: Privacy

On 24/7/2009 (Friday), we are listening a talk "Seen-Unseen:Privacy" from Dr. Ilias.

This talk is like a recall, refresh and reflect for us. In this talk, we are asked to recall the moment when we received the offer letters from Universiti Sains Malaysia and our hopes.

Firstly, Dr. Ilias asks us to study hard and consisten to make sure that our ambition can be fulfilled. Besides, we should not influence by others. We need to have good management about our money and time.

Furthermore, in my opinion, we must also have good and proper dressings. This is because what we wear will reflect our personalities. We should not wear any improper clothes just because we want to follow others.

I felt that I am the lucky one who can study at School of Housing, Building and Planning, Universiti Sains Malaysia and listen to the talk by Dr. Ilias. Thank you, Dr. Ilias.
